2.Subject Characteristics

(a) Reading programme

The reading programme in the English Language Curriculum aims to promote a rich and fun reading culture to nurture our students to develop a healthy reading habit while exploring and enjoying the language. Our reading programme is designed to cater for learners’ diversity through our enticing and practical activities, in the aim of consolidating and enriching their understanding.

Our students are encouraged to use the 'Highlights Library’ to read e-books. This platform provides students with the opportunity to practice not only their reading skills, but also their listening and comprehension skills. It is also complemented with an award scheme aiming to motivate students who lack interest and to award those who are already engaged.

Besides reading e-books, picture books are largely used to promote literacy in a more accessible way for students. It will help those who struggle with reading initially. Students learn to interpret books in their own way through these invigorating illustrations and successively develop a sense of awareness of the world connecting back to their daily lives and the underlying curriculum.

(b) E-Learning (BYOD)

P.4 to P.6 students make use of their own mobile computer devices to get access to various apps in the aim of enhancing their learning. E-learning can encourage students with different learning styles (such as visual and auditory) to learn confidently. It also allows students to work creatively, efficiently, and independently. Most importantly, it can cater for student’s individual needs. E-learning will encourage students to become self-directed learners and eventually achieve their learning goals effectively.

(c) Key Stage 1 English Curriculums Curriculum

Our P1 and P2 curriculums are specifically designed to help students get ready for school and learn English in a fun and authentic environment. The curriculums cover a wide variety of learning activities. English booklets are designed to learn language items, while picture books are used to broaden student's creativity and increase their engagement in class.

(d) Lessons with NET

The NET lessons are designed to help students build phonics skills, as well as reading and writing skills. P.1 and P.2 focus mostly on building phonics skills using phonics workbooks. P.3 and P.4 lessons are designed to improve students’ reading skills with the application of the phonic knowledge. Lastly, P.5 and P.6 students read and appreciate the classic stories. They consolidate their knowledge through different writing activities and applying previously learnt phonics and reading skills.

Shakespeare4All – a transformation through creativity

This programme organized by Shakespeare4All, emphasizes on releasing one’s creativity and building self-confidence. Students study the adapted Shakespeare script, take part in acting, voice practice etc. They are introduced to elementary backstage design and production knowledge in addition to acting and performance skills. These students are also encouraged to challenge themselves and build on peer-to-peer, self-directed and inclusive learning throughout the course.
